Electricity is dangerous, it can cause fires, burns and electrical shocks resulting in death.
Any electrical system, whether installed in a house, office, shop, workshop, warehouse, school, hall in fact any building and any anywhere outside has to be maintained for the safety of all users and visitors, it has to function correctly without the risk of fire or electrical shock to the occupants of the building including any electrical equipment installed outside and fed from the property.
To ensure that is it safe and is suitable for continued use an Electrical Installation Condition Report should be carried out at regular intervals, these vary dependant on the use, type and age of property. Places where the public visit will need testing more frequently than your own home, commercial premise have a different environment to a factory where there may be a lot of heavy electrical machinery, in order for the test to be carried out effectively and safely an engineer experienced in the environment to be tested should be instructed.
A barrage of tests is carried out with calibrated electrical test meters on the circuits, distribution boards and connected accessories to look for problems that are not visible to the naked eye and a report is compiled listing any problems found as well as test results that can be compared to the original tests to note changes.
It Is a condition for the Electricity at Work regulations that regular testing is carried out and a copy of the report is retained on record with any unsafe conditions rectified without delay. Your insurance company will require a copy of the latest test and report in the event of a claim or on the renewal of a policy.
